Doulas can provide you with information, encouragement, and advocacy before, during and after delivery…a doula is not a substitute for a nurse because doulas cannot provide any medical care, but most labor and delivery staff do not mind you having a doula as long as the doula does not interfere with the work the medical personnel must perform.

The doula frequently fills the role of coach, freeing your partner to be a comforter, and facilitates communication between you and the medical staff. Before you embark on the search for a doula, ask for your doctor’s input about hiring a labor assistant. Some doctors are receptive to labor support personnel and can even refer you to experienced individuals; others feel strongly that your existing medical team is the best provider of these services.
